Sculptors in Greek and Roman cultures were looking for "the perfect form," thus the reason so many of their sculptures were fidelitous, almost exacting reproductions of the human form. These human forms were usually used to represent the various deities. Mortal men were more common than mortal women in these eras. 

The image of an Amazon splits the difference in that the Greeks and Romans may have been treating them as champions like Perseus and Heracles; they possess a touch of the divine. At the same time, they thought the Amazons were from an area called Thrace, which is modern Syria.
